Al Qaeda in Syria. A Sunni Jihadist group currently engaged in fighting against the Syrian government in civil war. The goal of Nusra Front is to create an Islamist state in Syria. Founded in 2012 and called the most successful rebel group in Syria by the Washington Post...Nusra Front has since been designated a terrorist organization by the United States government.
Allied nations have tried to get Nusra Front to separate from Al Qaeda with plans then to support them in their effort to crush the Syrian army. Western observers consider such a split unlikely. Nusra front continues cooperation with other Jihadist groups and the Free Syrian Army in efforts operations against the government.
